She’s The Designer Behind StyleTemple

StyleTemple is the most prestigious fashion house in Abuja with its experience centre located in the heart of the FCT. Founded by a young female serial entrepreneur, Ogugua Okonkwo, the fashion house is poised to dominate the bespoke female fashion industry and pioneer a new school of thought in the Nigerian fashion designing industry as evidence in their newly launched fashion school.

StyleTemple opened its doors for business for the first time in November 2011 and has experienced phenomenal growth since then in both clientele and revenue. It plans to expand to other major cities in Nigeria and abroad in the near future.

Tell us about yourself, growing up, family background, education and all?

I am Ogugua Okonkwo, and I come from a very small family with two siblings. Growing up I was highly influenced by my parents. One of my father’s core emphasis in life is education and uprightness, and my mother’s strength is determination and entrepreneurship hence a priceless unity that shaped what I am today. I schooled in Nigeria, finishing from University of Nigeria Nsukka in 2008 with a B.Sc in Medical Laboratory Science. I also have a certificate in fashion merchandising.

What else do you do for a living?

All I do for a living currently revolves around fashion. This is because I breathe fashion and I’m passionate about the industry. Maybe sometime in the distance future I might consider diversifying into other ventures.

Please fill us in on your rise to fame and how did it all start.

I don’t consider myself famous, I just see myself as hardworking. My early days with StyleTemple were quite small and humble. I decided against pursuing a career as a medical lab scientist. When I made this decision, I had almost no savings but I took a leap of faith and started out. I went for the necessary trainings, forged the right partnership, moved to a small location in Wuse 2, pulled off sleepless nights to meet up with customer demands, dealt with the uncertainties of what the next day had to offer and yet still stayed focused. Now I am here.

Which of your many jobs excite you the most?

In one word, Bridals. I love it when brides walk into our Experience centre without a clue about what they will wear on their big day. I just ask them to trust us and we get to work until. Eventually they always leave StyleTemple in awe, thanking us profusely for what we fixed them up with. That gives me the most joy.

What other areas of your career are you looking to explore?

Eventually, I’ll dive into high-end fashion retail and merchandising. I’ll keep the rest as a secret and will carry you along as they unfold.

What has been the high point of your Fashion Career?

Right before the 50th birthday of the former DG of Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), Mrs Arunma Oteh, she was referred to StyleTemple. It was epic speaking to a woman who understood the challenges of being a hardworking, driven and successful young lady. She shared a lot of insights and gave significant advice in doing the right thing and improving myself. I still relive that experience in my head because I felt like I was endorsed by a great mentor.

What other areas of your career are you looking to explore?

To be sincere, I remain grateful for the little I have achieved over time and look forward for more to come. I choose to count my high moments as opposed to my low moments.

What are the plans for the future, short-term goals, anything?

Like I told you earlier, my plans for the future are my best kept secret. However, as they get closer, I’ll make sure to carry you along.

Where are you located?

StyleTemple opened a new Experience Center at No 20 Limpopo Street Maitama Abuja. Our team is continuously growing, our customer satisfaction approach is being amplified and worked on every day. Any last words for young fashion designers aspiring to be like you?

Never make excuses as to why you cannot achieve your goals.

In the real world, there is no ideal situation, things will always go wrong and the difference between the successful and the rest is how hard they work towards their goals. So decide on what you want to do in life and pursue it with all your strength like you have no plan B.
