Learn More About Model, Ajak Deng

Her dark, smooth skin is imbued with this wonderful aura that compliments her brilliant, child-like smile. Her persona, ebullient, pugnacious. Her proportions, lean, lanky. Ajak Deng is a supermodel in all aspects of the phrase and as cliche as that may sound, the arduous journey she endured to make it to the catwalks of Milan and London, as well as the pages of your favorite fashion mag is anything but. Born in Tonj, Sudan, Angelique nee´ Ajak Deng led a fairly simple life until conflict arose forcing her and her family to flee the country. They would trek over a thousand miles, finally settling in a Kenyan refugee camp. While they escaped the fighting, her family would endure further upheaval and heartbreak when her mother succumbs to Malaria. In 2005, Ajak and her family find a new life in Australia.

Always tall for her age, she was constantly asked whether she was a model. She resisted the idea until high school. She got her portfolio together and prompted by her high school teacher, she went for it and from there, it didn’t take her long before she signed with IMG in 2009. Since her ascension in the ranks of the fashion world, Ajak has found herself in the company of a small cadre of Sudanese models. Most notable among them, Alek Wek (whom she idolized) and Ataui Deng (close friend, no relation). Ajak Deng has walked for some of the most famous fashion houses like Marc Jacobs, Maison Martin Margiela, Hermes, Givenchy, Valentino, Jean Paul Gaultier, Lanvin, Chloé. She has also worked with some of the biggest fashion photographers in the game such as Mert + Marcus, Mikael Jansson and Norman Jean Roy. She’s been published in Vogue, i-D, Elle, and W. She’s also been featured in campaigns for Kenzo, Kate Spade, cK One, Top Shop and Benetton.
