Deodorant tops grocery list for broke South Africans

Is buying deodorant more important than buying bread? According to recent data, South Africans are still willing to spend on deodorants and fragrances, regardless of the tougher economic climate – proof that SA loves to smell good!

How much would you spend to smell good? According to the latest data from EuroMonitor, deodorant is still at the top of the average South African’s grocery list due to the country’s hot and humid climate. And while smelling good may not seem like a necessity, data shows that deodorant sales grew by 8% in the last year alone.

Fragrance buying has also increased in the past financial year, with the premium fragrance market growing and brands launching more premium fragrances. “Fragrances are expected to continue benefitting from the grooming trend in South Africa in the forecast period, with this driving strong gift purchases for both men and women,” states EuroMonitor.

The reason for this is the growth in the number of women joining the workforce and buying fragrances for themselves and as gifts. According to EuroMonitor, this trend will see the fragrance market “see the strongest growth in overall beauty and personal care in the forecast period”.

So if you’re set to stick with the trend, what will you be buying this year? We’ve put together some of our favourite premium fragrance launches for the upcoming quarter that we forecast will be top of your shopping list.
